Beware of the Creeps!

Those creepy creeps.  Sitting for prolonged periods in an unsupported posture can cause the soft tissue (tendons, ligaments, joints, disks) in your back to deform and elongate.  In medical terms this is called CREEP.  And these creeps are associated with increased low back pain due to the laxity it causes and increased susceptibility to injury.  Now, this doesn’t have to be just in the low back.  It can also occur in other areas such as your mid-back, neck, wrists, shoulders, etc.  So make sure you are sitting in a good posture (creeps love slouching) and using good support.

Technical Stuff -
Here’s the official medical definition of creep for those who are keeping score:

creep [krēp]
1. a physical property of materials that results in progressive deformation when a constant load is applied over time; it allows soft tissues to tolerate applied loads by lengthening.

Here’s some good stuff from people who seem like to study creep and low back pain:

The Master Sit-ologist is in the building!

So what is a Sit-ologist and/or Sit-ology?  Actually, if you look up the definition of the word sitology, without the hyphen, it means the scientific study of food, diet, and nutrition.  That didn’t quite fit what I wanted since this it all about sitting, not food.   So I made up the word Sit-ology and Sit-ologist by cleverly adding a hyphen. Now it means, “one who studies sitting or the study of sitting.”   It’s good to be king.

I have also declared myself a Master of Sit-ology.  Since I was already making up words and I’ve put in consider time and effort researching the wonderful world of sitting, I decided I would be a Master Sit-ologist.  I originally was going to be the self-appointed Czar of Sit-ology but I didn’t want to assume all that power and responsibility at this time.

So here I am…just plain ol’   Dr. Neal, Master Sit-ologist.
